The History of Pie

The evolution as pie as we know it today was said to begin as early as 9500 BC. While we enjoy it as a dessert or comfort food today, it originated from a functional need. Those traveling long distance by horse or carriage in these earlier days needed to keep food with them and traveling with raw ingredients and a cook slowed down their travel. The idea of wrapping cooked ingredients inside a flour based pastry was the answer.

The very first pies were believed to contain honey as an ingredient. These were the very first sweet rolls or sweet pies. By 2000 BC there were meat pies being made. This was evidenced by a chicken pie recipe believed to have been written before 2000 BC.

The early pies were made with hearty meats and were designed as a source of sustenance. Today's pies are mostly filled with fruit, sugar, and other sweet things made as a special treat.

Though the concept of pie originated in ancient Egypt, it is considered an American treat today. The term "as American as apple pie" was actually said to have originated from England. The first settlers brought it into what would later become the United States.

Pie is big business in the modern world. It is said that approximately $700 million is spent on pies in the U.S. alone each year!
